Develop People ..... Not Property

In one of the most powerful and weathly cities in the world
Homeless people are becoming invisible.
This society and government have cast a blind eye to a
growiing epidemic across this great nation

This should be everyone's concern

On a daily basis new men and women are added to the homeless population in Washington, DC, many of whom have been caught in the city's new "Development Movement" and soaring housing prices. This is not an issue for those citizens who currently have homes, cars and secure jobs, but it should be. Our nation and this city are being judged by our treatment of people who are less fortunate. Many think that the population of homeless individuals and families are in their current situation because of alcohol, drugs,crime or lack of proper education to maintain and sustain a comfortable life. This could not be further from the truth. It is incumbent upon citizens and the DC Council to ensure this facility remains.

Frankilin School Shelter - 925 13th St NW

This is a perfect investment into the lives of homeless men.

The location is central and accessible to many

downtown services including food, clothing, showers and

District Human Service facilities.

The capacity of the building would allow for more men

and provide space for internal services.

The Franklin Shelter will provide the District of Columbia

with a model shelter and build a bridge from a

hopeless situation to a hopeful one.

The Franklin Shelter was scheduled to close after the

hypothermia season, March 31, 2007. This was

unacceptable to the approximately 250 men who use

this facility, especially given the reason: the city

planned to allow a developer to renovate this building as a

"Hip Hotel". Due to our efforts and your support we were able

to convince the city agree to pull out of the development

deal and renovate the property with the aim of turning

Franklin School Shelter into the kind of model facility

for homeless men that belongs in the District.
